Welcome to Choices Charter School!
Director - Brent Givens
Since 1999, Choices Charter School has been offering a flexible, independent study program. Our learning model is based on flexibility that requires responsibility and we offer wide variety of online courses and curriculum with in-person classes. With the advent of COVID-19, our school is already well prepared to help families and students achieve their educational goals.
Our programs were founded to meet the needs of many different types of students/families who would find success in an alternative educational setting: families who have become dissatisfied with traditional school programs; students and parents who are searching for a different learning/teaching environment; families who want to take an active role in their student’s learning; students who are struggling in the mainstream school setting; those who learn best in a small or independent environment, and a host of other reasons. A key goal of the Charter is to keep students in school while expanding their options for the future through academic success and connections with business/community partnerships.
Choices Charter School is the safest school I’ve ever been associated with. We are a zero-tolerance school, and staff, families, and students hold each other accountable to the established rules and guidelines. An Individual Learning Plan is established to set goals for each student and is reviewed regularly for evaluation and update. Skills in organization and time management are taught, but parent participation is essential for student success.
As a student in San Juan Choices Charter School, your success depends greatly on your motivation and attitude. Be honest with yourself and with others. Focus on the educational tasks you are assigned. Attend all classes and appointments as scheduled, and be an active participant in your learning process.
Our goal is that our students will find success at Choices Charter School through hard work and that they will feel known, valued and connected.
Assistant Director - Russell Brown
I was sure of very few things in High School, but I was sure of this: I was NEVER going to be a teacher. Oh, how life changes.
I did not get into education because History is important...although it IS.
I did not get into education because Math is important...although IT IS.
I did not get into education because Education is important...ALTHOUGH IT IS.
I got into education because our children are important, and through a roundabout path (Tow Truck Driver, Youth Director, Business Owner, Landscape Maintenance Foreman, Youth Director again), I have learned that I prefer to work with young people of the Middle and High School variety, and I prefer to do so in an Alternative Education format. I started working in the industry in the year 2001, start teaching at Choices in 2004, and earned my Admin Credential and started as Assistant Director in 2015. Lo, these many years later, I still believe that working with students and their families to be a rewarding and honorable vocation.
